Richard Serra drawings in Bonnefanten museum Maastricht

richard serra drawing black canvas bonnefanten maastricht

© Dennis Hambeukers 2011

Richard Serra is famous for his huge abstract walk-in Cortensteel sculptures. In these works he creates a new, distorted sensation of space. His ‘drawings’, as he calls them, are not so well known. They consist of canvasses covered with a black tar-like paint that he cuts into large rectangular shapes. He determines their size and shape according to the space they occupy and then fixes them directly on the wall. He preferably covers the canvasses with the black paintstick in the space they are going to be exhibited. This is a tedious and painstaking work, but is allows him to get a feeling for the space while he is working on the pieces. With these black canvasses he interacts with the space, changing its spatial composition and experience. He draws in the space with his black shapes.

Some of his works are now [18.09.11 - 15.01.12] on display at the Bonnefanten museum in Maastricht together with works from Soll Lewitt, Robert Mangold and Bruce Nauman in an exhibition called ‘Extended Drawing’. My review of the exhibition will be available later on ZwartGoud.

Walking around the Agora Theatre in Lelystad designed by UN Studio

Agora Theater Lelystad UN Studio

© Dennis Hambeukers 2011

The Agora Theatre (2007), designed by UN Studio, in Lelystad adds a spark of color to the grey edge of the town’s city center. The building is surrounded by drab, gray, slightly depressing buildings. The theatre is a hard, industrial, bright, colourfull, transformed-sea-container-like-cristal attempt to boost the confidence of Lelystad, that is suffering from it’s outdated city centre that was build in the 80’s. It is doubtfull however that this architectural masterpiece by UN Studio can single-handedly save the city. It made me drive all the way to Lelystad. It was well worth my while.

Ben van Berkel and Caroline Bos start their 1998 essay “Liquid politic” in the book “Move” like this:

The necessity to become a little mad is not part of an architectural education. To dare to put forward ideas, to offer up visions and to realise the unexpected requires pushing the imagination. But how crazy should we get?

The Agora Theatre is build almost ten years later and could pass as an answer to this question: pretty crazy.

A look at UN Studio La Defense office building in Almere

“No matter how he looks baby, it’s the inside that counts” [lyrics from Yosh - It's Whats Upfront That Counts].

La Defense is an office building for the IRS (Belastingdienst) and the Centre for Work and Income (CWI) that doesn’t look like much on the outside, but is a magical feast of color, light and reflection on the inside. Inside the building is a public space that is an oasis of changing colors. The façades are covered in a special foil that changes color depending on light conditions and the position of the viewer. It’s a meditative space with benches that invite you to just sit and enjoy the spatial qualities. It’s one of the most spectacular public spaces I ever saw.

Last week I visited Ronchamps, Franche-Comté, in France to photograph Le Corbusier’s church for the Notre Dame du Haut. Le Corbusier is one of the most famous architects in the world and this church is one of his best buildings. That is why this church is not only a beloved destination for religious pilgrims, but also for architectonic pilgrims. In Ronchamps you can worship architecture, just like you can do at this other famous religious building by Peter Zumthor.
